House of the Dragon will end with its fourth season — and the wait will be long. HBO has confirmed that the final season of the Game of Thrones prequel arrives in summer 2028, with filming starting in early 2027. Here is everything we know so far.

1. The final season is set

Season 4 will be the show’s last, with eight episodes closing out the Dance of the Dragons — the Targaryen civil war adapted from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. Showrunner Ryan Condal confirmed the writers’ room was already sending drafts to HBO in mid-2026, and the season follows the show’s two-year rhythm: 2022, 2024, 2026, and now 2028.

2. The endgame is about dragons

Condal has described the final stretch as the end-of-days phase of the civil war. As he put it, armies will matter less and less — what matters is who has a dragon, which dragon is on which side, and who they fight for. Season 3 ended in August 2026 with major deaths and no winners, only death and destruction.

3. Alys Rivers returns

Gayle Rankin, who plays the mysterious healer Alys Rivers, has confirmed she will be back for season 4, with filming beginning in early 2027. Her character’s story with Aemond — and the significance of Helaena Targaryen’s death, which Condal says removes a rare Targaryen dreamer from the world — will shape the final season’s darkness.

4. Bigger than ever

Condal has promised the biggest production the series has ever mounted, with new characters, dragons and locations. Season 3 closed with 34 million global viewers per episode, so the appetite for the finale is enormous. The long wait is the price of dragons that size: visual effects alone take months.
