After 17 years away, Friday the 13th is back — and for the first time in the franchise’s history, critics actually like it. The Peacock prequel series Crystal Lake premiered on October 15, 2026, jumping straight to the top of the streaming chart. Here is what the return means for Jason Voorhees.
1. Crystal Lake
The eight-episode series goes back to the beginning, telling the story of Pamela Voorhees (Linda Cardellini), the killer of the original 1980 film. It shows Jason’s drowning as a boy, Pamela’s spiral, and the events that lead to the first film’s massacre — including a timeline change that moves Jason’s death to 1971 and reworks the original’s famous opening kill.
2. A first for the franchise
Across 12 movies, Friday the 13th never earned a Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Crystal Lake broke that streak, with reviewers praising its atmosphere and its willingness to treat Pamela as a character rather than a twist. All eight episodes dropped at once on Peacock, with episode titles borrowed from the films themselves: Camp Crystal, Part II, Part III, A New Beginning, The New Blood, Kill Them, Mommy, and Friday.
3. The original that started it
The 1980 original — camp counselors stalked at a summer camp with a tragic history — cost just $650,000 and made $59.7 million, launching the slasher boom. Legal battles over the rights then froze the franchise for 15 years after the 2009 reboot, until the Jason Universe initiative finally cleared the way.
4. More coming
Horror Inc. confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con 2025 that a new sequel film and a sequel game are both in development, calling them the top priority. For the first time in nearly two decades, Camp Crystal Lake is open again. Watch the trailer on the movie’s page.
