The trailer for Hope, the long-awaited new film from Na Hong-jin, the director behind The Chaser and The Wailing, is finally here — and it is one of the most talked-about trailers of the year. A remote village, a mysterious creature, and a cast that spans Korean and Hollywood stars: here is everything the trailer reveals.
1. A village under threat
The story opens in the remote South Korean village of Hope Harbor, near the Demilitarized Zone, where police chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min) and officer Sung-ae (Hoyeon) investigate a mysterious creature wreaking havoc on the community. The trailer keeps the creature mostly in shadow, which only makes it more unsettling.
2. Nothing is what it seems
The film’s central idea is that perceptions can be misleading. What begins as a hunt for a beast turns into something stranger, as the villagers discover they may be the ones being hunted. The trailer leans into that paranoia, cutting between the search party and the thing watching them.
3. A huge international cast
Alongside Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung and Hoyeon, the film stars Alicia Vikander, Michael Fassbender, Taylor Russell and Cameron Britton. It is one of the biggest Korean-international ensemble casts ever assembled for a film like this.
4. Cannes premiere, global release
Hope premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2026 before opening in US theaters on September 9, 2026. Reports now point to a digital release in mid-October 2026, with a limited-edition Blu-ray following on December 31, 2026.
5. The scale is enormous
Running 157 minutes, Hope is Na Hong-jin’s biggest film yet — a sci-fi mystery with action scale and a horror undercurrent. Early reactions have praised its atmosphere and its refusal to explain everything. Watch the trailer and check the ratings on the movie’s page.
